WHAT IS KIRIROM NATIONAL PARK ?
In the past, King “Sisovath Monivong” gave the name Kirirom which means “Mountain of Joy” in the 1930s, and this place was also known as Phnom Vorvong Sorvong. Kirirom Mountain Park is a well-known historical mountain in Kompong Spue Province, Camboida, located about 112 Km northwest of Phnom Penh Capital City. Years back, This place had a different name “Preah Suramarith-Kossomak”.This was then officially used in Cambodia to refer to this place and has been changed to “Kirirom National Park” a part of the “Southwest Clusters Project Areas” in 1993 under IUCN Catergory II (International Union for Conservation of Nature).
Unique, natural and beautiful sceneries rest in this pine forest such as the astonishing waterfalls. This forest is home to many endangered animal. Popular picnic sports and wide variety of leisure activities are relish here in Kirirom Mountain.
THE PREVIOUS ROYAL PALACE FOR KING “SIHANOUK”
HIS Majesty King Norodom Sihanouk opened the visitors' center at the Preah Suramarit-Kossamak National Park in Kompong Speu-a case of a Royal homecoming. The center's site was once the King's residence, an area he named Kirirom Plateau more than 50 years ago. In 1950 Kirirom forest was designated a reserve by Royal decree. The King's residence was virtually destroyed by the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s, with only the chimney structure remaining.
CAMBODIAN TRADITIONAL BUDDHIST TEMPLES
There are two Cambodian traditional Buddhist Temples where guests can buy some incense, make offerings and pray for good health and prosperity and safety in returning home.
The beautiful scenery of lofty pine trees swaying gracefully along the pathways, along with other tropical plants, will mesmerize you. It is a natural landscape that shows-off attracting more tourists who love nature.
Kirirom National Park is a well-known place with natural waterfalls during rainy season. The most beautiful one is found in Charmbok Village. This attraction is a 40m high waterfall. A number of tourists prefer traditional OX-Cart for transportation.
Wildlife inhabits Kirirom Mountain. Asian Elephant, Deer, Wild Ox Gaur, Wild Ox Banteng, Leopard, Spotted Linsang, Pileated Gibbon and Tiger live here. Furthermore, this place is an ideal spot to have a glimpse on some of the Kingdom's unique birdlife. International birdwatchers even come here to have a close up view of the birds.
